Recessed Outline vs Raised Border — Not the Same Thing

Our Outliner sets use a border that stands proud of the plate, catching a highlight along its top edge. This one does the opposite: the outline is cut into the surface, so what you see is a shadow groove rather than a lit ridge.

On a matte black finish that inversion matters. Matte black absorbs light, so a raised edge has very little highlight to catch and tends to disappear. A recessed groove works with the material instead — the shadow inside the cut is darker than the surrounding face, and darker on dark is still legible where lighter on dark is not. This is why the recessed treatment appears on our black sets and the raised one on the metal finishes.

Why a Steel Thumb-Turn Collar on a Black Handle

The thumb-turn is the one part of a lock people hunt for with their eyes, usually in a hurry and often in low light. Finishing it in the same matte black as everything else would make it invisible against the plate. The brushed steel collar marks its position without introducing a metal accent anywhere else on the handle, which keeps the piece reading as black while making the control easy to find.

Care & Maintenance

Dry soft cloth only. Never use solvents, metal polish or abrasive pads on matte black — anything that burnishes the surface leaves a permanent shiny patch. Run a dry soft brush along the recessed outline occasionally, since dust settling in the groove fills the shadow and flattens the effect the design depends on.
