Standard mortise fitting — the lock body seats in a pocket cut into the door edge and the plates fix through the door face. Decide which side takes the thumb-turn before fitting; it goes on the inside face of the room. Measure the backset first if replacing an existing lock. Mask around the fixing points while working, since matte black shows tool scuffs far more readily than brushed metal or antique brass. Care & Maintenance

Dry soft cloth only. Never use solvents, metal polish or abrasive pads on matte black — anything that burnishes the surface leaves a permanent shiny patch. Use a dry soft brush on the embossed spiral, where dust settles in the grooves and quietly flattens the relief over time. The steel collar wipes clean with the same cloth.

Why is the plate octagonal rather than square?

The corners are cut away at 45 degrees, a traditional metalworking detail. It is what makes this handle read as period hardware even in a modern black finish.

Is any part of it not black?

Only the brushed steel collar around the thumb-turn, which is there so the lock control stays easy to find. Everything else is matte black.

How is this different from your other black door locks?
