Standard mortise fitting — the lock body seats in a pocket cut into the door edge and the plates fix through the door face. Decide which side takes the thumb-turn before fitting; it goes on the inside face of the room. Measure the backset first if you are replacing an existing lock. Care & Maintenance

The two materials need different handling. Wipe the gold plates along the brush grain with a dry soft cloth, and keep metal polish away entirely. For the wood inlay, a dry or barely damp cloth only — never a wet cloth, never a solvent, and never furniture polish, which leaves a film that dulls the grain over time. If the inlay looks dry after a year or two, the smallest trace of a neutral wood oil on a cloth restores it; anything more will bleed onto the gold frame.

Can I fit it on an outdoor gate?

No. A wood inlay exposed to direct rain and sun will lift and fade. Use it on interior and covered entrance doors, and choose an all-metal set for anything exposed.

Can I lock it from inside without a key?

Yes — the inside plate has a thumb-turn. The outside face still needs the key.
